A Review
The German army invaded the small Island of Guernsey in June 1940. The Guernsey men were off fighting the war, which left only women, children, and a very few men on the Island. After London was bombed word was sent to transport all children to the mainland within a two day time period as the Germans were looking to occupy Guernsey. Guernsey is a British island located in the English Channel.
All the children were to leave the island by boat to London. The mothers were to bring their children to the school until the boats arrived to transport them to London. The mothers were not allowed to accompany their children to the boat. It was a very stressful time, the women had to be strong to survive what was coming, but the heartbreak and sadness was too much to bear.
Being a mother myself I felt their pain of leaving small children in the care of strangers. No one knew if they would live to welcome the children home after the war. I was overcome with sadness for days thinking about the frightened children.
The Germans arrived and took over the houses for themselves, and the women had to find other places to live. The soldiers had confiscated all the reading material along with radios, phones, and any electronics. There was no contact with the outside word for five years.
