Self Isolation

The year 2020 has changed our world as we know it. With the threat of the Coronavirus, non-essential businesses have been ordered to shut down and schools are closed.

Everyone is advised to stay at home except for shopping for food and emergencies.

Fortunately, some people are able to work from home on computers. Children are being homeschooled. This could be a time for parents and children to bond, but it is a challenge with the stress of being out of work and taming rambunctious children.

Parents need to be mindful and practice social distancing when taking children outside. This brings back memories of myself as a child during the Depression years. One obvious difference is we did not have to be confined to our homes. Over the years we have been faced with difficult times. We have prevailed.

.

In 1941 I was four when I became aware that it was a scary time. Adults talked about an atomic bomb. It was more in the tone of their voices that I knew it was something to fear. As children, we were told, when the air raid alarm blew, to pull down window shades, turn off lights and hide under our bed until the warning was over. At school in our classroom, the teacher instructed us to get under our desk. As children, we didn’t question, we just did it.
